Dayton A. Depue & Maria Clark

Dayton was born January 9, 1860 to Mathew (23) and Susan Kyte Depue (22) in Sandyston Township, NJ. He was the first of three children. He was a tenant farmer.

In 1881 (21) he married Maria Clark (25), born September 9, 1856, who was 4 years his senior. She was the daughter of Aaron Clark and Esther Layton.

They had nine children:

Myrtle 1881 m. John Losey
Claude Morris 1883 m. Lillian Cole
Linn 1885
Roy 1886
John Lloyd 1888
Zilpha or Marion 1891 m. ? Hankins or Hankinson
Beatrice 1892 m. Charles Perry
Earl 1896
Harold Clark 1898 m. Aurilla ?

Ilsa calls one of the children Floyd. This was probably Linn or Roy. Uncle Clark and Aunt Aurilla stayed close to Claud. We saw them often as children. They were good natured and fun to be with. I believe they moved to California.

Charles and Beatrice Perry lived outside Branchville on the Beemerville Road. Their son Brad worked at Selected Risks and lived next door to Ross while we were young and we played with their sons Laddie and Charles when growing up. Charles was killed in a tragic car accident while a teen and Laddie died of Leukemia at 25. A third and younger son Jay survived. Brad and his brother Clark coached youth baseball teams in Branchville.

Ilsa also recalls that Dayton, her grandfather, lived in Layton near the school and later near the center of town. Both houses were still there in July 1979. He may have been a tenant farmer, not owning the land he worked. Mom also remembers Maria as a tiny person with a good sense of humor.

Dayton died March 27, 1912 at age 52 of pulmonary tuberculosis as did both his parents. His obituary in the April 5 Wantage Recorder reads: "Dayton Depue died at his home near Layton, age 52 years. He was a farmer. His illness from consumption had been prolonged and nearly hopeless from its beginning. He married Maria Clark who survives him with 9 children: Claude of Newton, Myrtle, Earl, Clark and Beatrice at home, Loyd, Linn and Roy at Summit, and Mrs Zilpha Hankins of Walpack. The funeral was Sunday at the house, interment in Hainesville."

After Dayton's death Maria stayed in Layton raising the children still at home. At the time Clark, the youngest, was only 14. Ilsa was born after Dayton died. Maria died 16 years later of cancer (sarcoma of mesenteric, glands; contributory cause arterio sclerosis) on October 31, 1928 at age 72 in Frankford Township. Her obituary in the November 9 Wantage Recorder reads: Maria Depue died Wednesday of last week at the home of daughter Mrs. John Losey in Augusta at age 72. She left 2 daughters Mrs. Charles Perry and Mrs. Marion Haninson and 4 sons, Clark and Clark (sic) of Newton, Earl and Lloyd. She was the widow of Dayton. The funeral was in Hainesville Methodist Episcopal Church last Friday and interment in Hainesville Cemetery."

JRR saw the gravestone in the Abertown (Hainesville) Cemetery on July 1979. It reads: "Dayton A. Depue 1860-1912; Maria Clark his wife"
