⇐ Thomas, Jr.

Gideon Wickham & Mary Noyes

Gideon was born to Thomas Wickham, Jr and Mary Hurlbut in Wethersfield, CT in 1692; the last of eight children.

Gideon appears to have moved from Wethersfield to Long Island as a young man. At the time there was frequent and easy travel by ship from towns on the Connecticut River across Long Island Sound to the outer towns of Long Island. In the Seventeenth Century some Connecticut towns claimed land on Long Island. Gideon's Uncle Joseph, who was 30 years his senior, moved to Southold and that likely influenced Gideon as they remained close.

Joseph Wickham, settled on Long Island and operated a tannery in Bridgehampton. In 1698, he moved to Cutchogue and bought the old English house and 160 acres of fertile farmland which ran from the main road south to Peconic Bay. Joseph Wickham farmed the land until his death in 1732, at which time the land was willed to his eldest son, Joseph Jr.

On October 13, 1718 in East Hampton, LI at age 26 he married Mary Noyes, daughter of Francis Noyes (J 131) and Persis ???. The Noyes family emigrated from England.

They had four children:

Noyes 1740 m. Ruth Goldsmith
Mary m. Bennett Eglestone
Ann m. Hinchman Roberts
Sarah Samuel Robberds

On June 2, 1730, Gideon, who had been appointed administrator of his father Thomas' estate, exhibited his account and asked to be relieved of the administration in favor of his brother-in-law, Benjamin Deming.

On April 20, 1734, he witnessed the will of Joseph Wickham Sr.

Gideon was on the list of freeholders in Southold in 1737 along with his uncle Joseph Wickham Sr. He was also Justice of the town for a short time after his uncle's death.

On May 17, 1745, he witnessed the will of Daniel Goldsmith and on March 30, 1749 the will of Joseph Wickham Jr. This will mentions "2 acres of fresh meadow which I purchased of Gideon Wickham, lying near my dwelling house." Joseph Wickham, Jr. was his first cousin and close friend.

Mary was one of 18 members of the Cutchogue Church in 1750, but Gideon was not listed.

Gideon died December 26, 1752 in Cutchogue at age 60.

Mary outlived Gideon by 22 years and died May 14, 1775 when she was probably in her 70's.
